<p><a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/02/04/an-apology-to-our-readers/" target="_blank">Michael Arrington from Tech Cruch</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>This was not one of our full time writers, and so the frequency of posts was light. Nevertheless, we’ve also deleted all content created by this person on our blogs. We are fairly certain that most of the posts weren’t tainted in any way, but to be sure we’ve removed every word written by this person on the TechCrunch network.</p></blockquote>
<p>I agree that this is a very sad occasion for Tech Crunch, which will undoubtedly have to defend opinions and reviews for a few months at the very least.  While I don&#8217;t condone the intern&#8217;s actions, he was a young adult writing for a large website and probably got carried away.  I personally won&#8217;t take the information found on Tech Crunch any less seriously than I had before.</p>
<p>Daniel Brusilovsky, the intern from Tech Crunch, has publicly made a statement on his blog entitled, <a href="http://www.danielbru.com/2010/02/the-line-was-crossed/" target="_blank">The Line was Crossed</a>.</p>
<blockquote><p>This is the first day of the next learning stage for me. Yes, I am young, but from here, I can only learn more. To my family, friends, colleagues and especially, TechCrunch, I am sorry. I am taking this entire experience, learning and moving on.</p></blockquote>
<p>The basis of this situation is simply <em>trust</em>.  No matter if you are using an international news publication or a tech blog for all the Mac enthusiasts out there, you have to trust the authors.  Sadly, that trust has been broken.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I went to Burger King this morning to grab a biscuit and a water, a cheap way to eat breakfast on the go, for about 2 dollars.  However, it seems that Burger King is about to go bankrupt because the wonderfully cheerful voice informed me, &#8220;Are you aware that water is no longer free?  It&#8217;s 18 cents plus tax.&#8221;</p>
<p>You should scroll up and read that again.</p>
<p>Burger King cannot give me a free water.  So, I politely told the woman that I couldn&#8217;t afford the water, so I might as well not buy the biscuit either.  And I drove off.</p>
<p>Why does this infuriate me so much?  The pure principal behind the matter is maddening.  I&#8217;m a starving college student.  When I do eat &#8220;out&#8221;, I have to do so cheaply.  Hence the trips to Taco Bell (where you can eat for like 3 dollars) and other fast food places.  I get water because it is free, and over the last couple years, I&#8217;ve taken a liking to it again.  But no, Burger King won&#8217;t give me a water for free.  Evidently I, and others, have been eating into their profit margins (oh, a pun) and we have to go.</p>
<p>So, if you&#8217;re debating going to Burger King or somewhere else, I urge you to leave Burger King behind.  Unless you&#8217;re just fine with paying 18 cents plus tax for a water.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For those who haven&#8217;t heard of the most amazing web statistical software ever created, <a href="http://www.haveamint.com/">Mint</a>, I encourage you to stop reading this post and download it now.  Your life will never be the same.</p>
<p>I just had to throw this out there because I find myself doing it all the time.  I check my mint stats just about anytime I&#8217;m on the computer.  It&#8217;s just part of my routine.  Facebook, Mint, some message boards, my current debt&#8230;.</p>
<p>When I find a site that I haven&#8217;t seen before show up in my referrers list, I check it out.  I want to see who has sent me traffic!  So occasionally the referring site is someone else&#8217;s mint installation.  The instance that triggered this post was the good guys over at the Icon Factory for Frenzic.  Looks like I had a few people leave the site and show up in their mint list and they checked the site out in return.</p>

Basically, this man keeps being arrested for breaking and entering into women&#8217;s clothing stores so that he can take part in &#8220;sexual acts&#8221; with mannequins.  He has been arrested and served time several times since his first offense in 1993.  I just find this weird, but at the same time funny because the guy really didn&#8217;t have enough sense to just buy him a stupid mannequin and quit breaking the law.  Now he faces a lot of time because of all the repeat offenses.</p>

<p>Great.  So you hate reading about Apple stories, yet you take the time to leave comments on one.  Makes complete sense in a way, but aren&#8217;t you complaining to the wrong group of people at that point?</p>

<p>There were other comments in between these two, but basically it&#8217;s a back and forth anti-Microsoft, anti-Apple related stuff.  I mean, I dislike using a PC, but I don&#8217;t go around using foul language and talking bad about their products.  I&#8217;m intelligent enough to have an informed conversation with someone over the pros/cons of both platforms and at the end of the day it doesn&#8217;t matter whether MSFTdaBomb38 thinks that Apple products are horrible or not.</p>
<p>Bottom line?  Just how childish is this?  If the hardcore Windows users are so fed up with the amount of Apple-related content that is on digg (and there is enough to keep me reading, otherwise I would move on) why don&#8217;t they create their own Windows-centric kinda place and be happy there together?  Just my thoughts&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I mention this on here just because I find it humorous.  So, Vista hasn&#8217;t hit the store shelves yet.  Believe me, you would know because there will be tons of hype all over the net as well as a slew of bug fixes for the first few months.  It&#8217;s like looking into a crystal ball.</p>
<p>So why are we talking about Fiji?  Forgiving the code-name, Vista isn&#8217;t out the door and frankly, even if it was, I&#8217;m sure there will be tons of stuff the poor developers at Microsoft will have to do for months before they can sit back and go, &#8220;You know Bob, we rewrote 56.7 million* lines of code in about 5 years.  We&#8217;ve issued over 600 security fixes and updates to the users in the last 6 months.  Hell, I think we&#8217;re done&#8221;.</p>
<p>I just feel like Microsoft should focus on getting their product out the door, releasing enough updates to make it stable so that businesses will even consider the long and horrid upgrade process over the next few years, before contemplating the move to another OS.  Let&#8217;s not get greedy guys!</p>

<p>You can read more at the link below, but essentially this was developed with typesetting back in the 16th century.  Essentially it has a lot of Latin, most of it traced back to its original source back in 45 BC.  </p>
<p>For all this time I thought someone had just set down and created garbage and the industry had just adopted it.  Nope, it&#8217;s been with us for ages.  Just a bit of information I thought I would share along.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have an application that I work on just for kicks, adding new &#8220;features&#8221; and discovering how things work with Cocoa.  Today I tackled one of my larger fears to date; NSNumber.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure there are some seasoned Cocoa programmers out there wondering about my confusion over this class, but it was kinda scary.  I&#8217;m very comfortable writing plain C and feel very powerful because I know what is going on and if I get a little stumped, I can always hack something homemade together.  That&#8217;s not really the way it is a lot of times with Cocoa, there is so much already available you don&#8217;t have to hack it together and it would be better if you didn&#8217;t.  So back to NSNumbers.</p>
<p>Just to get your brains working this morning, here was a preview if() statement I had in my code, just checking to see if the number that the user entered in an NSTextField was of appropriate range.</p>

<p>This doesn&#8217;t seem too bad at all to me.  I need the value to be between 1 and 300.  However, I decided to get a bit more specific with my code and created an NSArray of NSNumbers holding the upper limits to check against in each specific case.  This was used to add that in the Category object itself and then you come up with the following if statement, if you will:</p>

<p>Now granted, you could still use a regular &#8220;&gt;=&#8221; operator here by calling the &#8220;- intValue&#8221; method on the NSNumbers I&#8217;m using.  However, I thought that I would go all out and even use an NSComparisonResult as well.  Just goes to show you that you can look smart and your code do nothing at all.  Another snippet of code is below for those that wondered about getting all of my NSNumbers into my Category array.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Because I&#8217;ve been spending a lot of time here in the last bit trying to come up with some graphics for the site&#8217;s new layout and tinkering with a professionally designed logo, I just got to wondering just how much work goes into creating something as beautiful as a UI element in a Mac program.  So, after reading a couple little tutorials and realizing that I really don&#8217;t even know about 5% of Photoshop&#8217;s potential, here is my creation using the circle tool (which I didn&#8217;t know existed but wondered why it wasn&#8217;t there), some layer masks (a very interesting concept indeed that I have yet to research so I can understand the concept behind it) and various other blending effects as well as creating my own gradient.  I give you, the blue circly thingy!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The comment spam has been under control since I started using Spam Karma 2, a plugin for WordPress.  I have it setup to receieve emails after a few comments have been caught, just in case something legit gets caught.  I checked the log today and just couldn&#8217;t help but laugh at the scores the comments received.  The comments are scored on stuff like the number of links, the email submitted and more, to help catch the junk.  I had one comment that had a score of -1524.  Yep, I&#8217;ve seen a -30 or so before, but never that.  I also had a -832 in the same batch.  That&#8217;s what happens when you post a comment on a post that is a few months old, hasn&#8217;t had any comments, an invalid email, nasty website address, and 65 links.  Just thought I would share.</p>

There are so far six episodes, online only, that depict a reality show where dirty men go off to a camp, Brawny Academy, and learn how to be a better husband, lover, a much better person because they can clean up after themselves. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I ran across this on Digg earlier and just had to share because it strikes me as so funny.  Basically, someone created a BINGO card with squares labeled with product announcements rumored to appear at WWDC.  So, as Jobs calls out announcements, he&#8217;s actually calling out squares, and then everyone is supposed to shout BINGO if there&#8217;s a winning row (like real BINGO, except there&#8217;s no variations on the card, so it would just be a bunch of people getting up and yelling at the same time &#8220;BINGO!&#8221;).</p>
<p>The super-funny part comes in when I was reading the comments on the article from Digg and ran across this user&#8217;s reaction.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s Steve Jobs&#8217;  famous &#8220;one more thing&#8221;, with a BINGO twist for this special occasion. <p>They are &#8220;Gargle&#8221; boxers.  They resemble a Google search page with twists on common buttons and links.  For a geek like me, this is just too much.  Below are a few pictures for your amusement.</p>

<p>I went to see <em>Cars</em> this past weekend with high hopes that it would be a good movie.  I&#8217;ve got used to seeing top notch stuff come out of Pixar Studio here in the last few years.  This movie was no let down.</p>
<p>I won&#8217;t go into all the details of the movie, but I absolutely LOVED it.  That&#8217;s saying a lot since I was the oldest person there (that wasn&#8217;t a parent with screaming kids..from excitement).  The plot was wonderfully crafted, the characters were well rounded, Tow-mater (Larry the Cable Guy) added tons and tons of comedy and it was just a great movie.  I highly recommend seeing it.</p>
<p>As Pixar does with it&#8217;s movies though, they have a short film at the beginning.  So, I was almost as excited about the short film  (I&#8217;ve bought all of them from the iTMS already) as I was about the picture itself.  Sure enough, I wasn&#8217;t let down.</p>
<p><em>One Man Band</em> is a short film where these two hilarious paupers are playing instruments to get the one coin from this little girl.  I just like her facial expression once she drops her coin and demands that the paupers pay her back.  (The picture above&#8230;hint hint).</p>

<p>I played around on the website some last night and ran across a few more cool things.  Best of all, they&#8217;re free!</p>
<p>First off, there is a simple page that lets you generate useless business titles.  Stuff like &#8220;Intra Departmental Associate&#8221; wouldn&#8217;t be hard to come across. <p>I was working on a computer earlier this afternoon and just happened to notice this box sitting on the user&#8217;s desk.  Being the inquisitive person that I am (while waiting for WIndows to reboot on a lovely PII tower) I investigated.</p>
<p>What I found caught my attention and made me laugh out loud.  And the more I thought about it, I thought &#8220;Why not?!&#8221;  It was a box that had pictures of Lego like figures on it.  The whole idea behind the scheme is that you buy these little boxed sets (for 12.95, I already checked) and in the box you get a cubicle, computer, phone, chair, the person, and some other stuff to make their cubicle as home-like as possible.</p>
<p>So, as the advertising on the box suggests, &#8220;You can make their lives a living hell, be their best pal, or just let them get along&#8221;.  I found the whole thing immensely hilarious and I&#8217;m seriously thinking about buying up a few of these as some gifts for older friends who are in the dreaded &#8220;corporate world&#8221; already.</p>

<p>999 Macbooks (120GB HDD and 2GB Ram) comes in at a whopping 2,196,801.00 dollars.Â  And this is even before tax.Â  On my 1400 dollar order today, 140 in tax was added on top of that.Â  Just imagine the bill if you included taxes and shipping.</p>
<p>So, in high spirits (and partly because this is an excellent way to procrastinate studying for an exam just hours away) I decided to compile a short list of amazing shopping cart totals.Â  Enjoy.</p>
<p>999 PowerMac Quad G5&#8242;s completely maxed out with 16GB Ram, etc along with 999 30&#8243; Apple Displays to go with them:Â  Â  Â  Â  Â   18.6MÂ  (18,604,377.00)</p>
<p>One maxed out Mac Mini (1.66Ghz, 2Gb Ram, 120Gb HDD) and a 23&#8243; Apple Display comes in at 2,523.00 dollars.Â  I wonder if anyone has seriously considered this configuration before.</p>
<p>Question: Is there a limit on other types of online stores that let you go past digits in a regular Apple Store.Â  I was wondering if you had a business account if you might be able to place a larger order?Â  Although, if I placed an order for 999 computers, or even saved the cart, I&#8217;m sure I would be having a pleasant call from an Apple employee shortly.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure there are other wild ways to dream about spending a small government&#8217;s worth of funds, let me know if you have anything else creative.</p>

<p>A friend at work recently introduced me to this British comedy called &#8220;The IT Crowd&#8221; and I&#8217;m hooked now.  It is based around 2 geeks and one woman who is computer illiterate all thrown down in the basement of this large corporation and all the trouble they get into.  This little clip is from the beginning of the first or second episode.  It&#8217;s a commercial that the characters are watching that&#8217;s advertising the &#8220;new and improved emergency services&#8221;.  I find it insanely hilarious because of the commercial itself and the tune is very catchy.  In fact, I clipped it and have it as my ringtone on my phone.  0118 999 881 999 119 725 3&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone needs a little amusement in their day and I&#8217;d been meaning to post these pictures a little while back.  We were really bored at work one day and thought it would be interesting to play around with the Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop features that are built into Windows XP Pro.</p>
<p>So, I downloaded the Remote Desktop Client (from Microsoft) and entered all the info (after turning remote access on the computer).  So, it connected just fine to the computer that was sitting next to me.  Then, I connected to a friends laptop.  Then I connected to the desktop and from that computer in turn connected to my friend&#8217;s laptop.  Things were starting to get interesting.</p>
<p>So far, no one had connected to my computer.  So, I tried to get that setup and working.  Easy enough to flip a switch (metaphorically, I checked a box in Sharing Preferences) to get a VNC server up and running on my computer, but it took us awhile to figure out how to get a Windows computer to connect to my VNC server (even though we were using an open-source client, like RealVNC).</p>
<p>Just to test to make sure that everything was working, I tried to connect to myself, using Chicken of the VNC.  Sure enough, it let me connect with no problems.  The funny thing that happened though was a myriad of desktops, and moving the mouse created a wave effect.  The most fun I&#8217;ve had at work in awhile.  There are some thumbnails below, click on them to make bigger and see just how funny it looks.  It reminds me of those maze and &#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo?&#8221; pictures from my earlier years.</p>

<p>I decided this weekend to try and quiten my PC by following some other members lead and going down the water cooling road. The fans on my PC were really starting to drive me mad<img alt="mad"> </p>
<p>The first thing that I did was to remove all the fans. The one on the processor and graphics card were no problem but the one in the power unit was a bugger to get out.</p>
<p>The most difficult part was sealing all the ventilitation openings in the PC case with silicon. I also put silicon all around the joints on the PC case. The smell of silicon was dreadful but when my wife complained I told her to be patent as it will be worth it when we have a completely silent PC.</p>
<p>Because I had completely sealed the PC case the only opening near top was the DVD drive. So I opened that and put the small hose I had purchased specially for the job into the DVD drive as far as it would go. With what I can only describe as great excitement and anticipation, I turned on the water. It really is amazing just how long it took before the case was complete full, and boy was it heavy. That didn&#8217;t really bother me as I didn&#8217;t intend to be moving the PC anyway.</p>
<p>The big moment had arrived so I called in my wife and mother in law (who was visiting) and I announced &#8220;prepare to hear nothing!&#8221; and flicked the switch on the socket on the wall.</p>
<p>Before I could even press the power button on front of the PC, with a loud bang, the whole place was plunged into darkness</p>
<p>I knew that it was only the tripswitch so I told my onlookers not to panic and I ran out to the hall to turn the trip switch back on. But can u believe it, it wouldn&#8217;t stay on. After five attempts I decided to try unplugging the PC and would you believe&#8230;yes the trip switch stayed on. My conclusion: the PC must have in some way been causing the problem. </p>
<p>After about an hour of tries I finally decided to abandon the whole idea of water cooling and emptied the water out of the PC, put back in the fans (except the fan in the power unit, I had broken that one getting it out) and tried the pc AGAIN. IT STILL CAUSED THE TRIP SWTICH TO BLOW!</p>
<p>My PC is completely shagged thanks to stupid suggestions that I got on this forum. What the hell am I going to do now. I spent two hours last night with a hair drier inside the PC case and it still trips the switch.<img alt="mad"> <img alt="mad"> <img alt="mad"> </p>
<p>Any suggestions greatly appreciated</p>
