Reading, United Kingdom – Velvet Rock Apps today is pleased to introduce LightsOut 1.0 for iPad, their general knowledge and trivia quiz game for one or two players. The game includes over 750 multiple choice questions on a variety of topics: images, TV, movies, music, science, literature, government, anagrams, nature, history, sports, etc. In single-player mode, players have a maximum of 10 seconds to correctly answer a multiple choice question containing three possible answers. Points are awarded depending on how quickly the correct answer is chosen. Incorrect answers turn off one of the player’s three light bulbs, and when they are all extinguished the game ends. In 2-player mode, contestants are on opposite sides of the board and each is asked the same question simultaneously. Both have the identical three choices, and whoever answers correctly first has the option of relighting one of his own bulbs, or turning off one of their opponent’s. Each starts with all five bulbs on, and the player with any bulbs remaining lit when their opponent has none wins the game.
There are many iOS quiz games, but it is this game’s concept and execution that makes LightsOut a standout. Questions are taken from a very wide variety of fields of knowledge, and are especially chosen so as not to give special advantage to English speakers in any particular geographical location. Questions come in many forms, making gameplay unpredictable and exciting. Prior to the question appearing there is an alert: “Get Ready – Question” or “Get Ready – Which One is True,” or “Get Ready – Identify this Picture”, or “Get Ready – Word Definition,” etc. Then the question appears in white text on a black background, with the three possible choices in black text on a gray background directly below. At the bottom of the screen (both single and 2-player games are played in landscape orientation) are three red circular buttons labeled “A,” “B,” and “C.”
In the single-player mode, a correct answer causes the entire question box to flash green, and then display “Correct Answer – You Answered in 3.7 Seconds – 15 Points.” The exact number of seconds to one-tenth of a second is displayed, and points are awarded according to the following rules: 0.0 – 2.0 seconds=25 points; 2.1 – 5.0 seconds=15 points; 5.1 – 8.0 seconds=10 points; and 8.1 – 10.0 seconds=5 points. Failing to make a choice in fewer than 10 seconds or choosing an incorrect answer causes one of the player’s light bulbs to go out. The challenge in single-player mode is for the player to score as many points as they can before the game ends, which requires finding the ideal balance between answering as quickly as possible, and answering as accurately as possible.
In 2-player mode, gameplay remains the same except that there are now two sets of question boxes and answer buttons, facing in opposite directions. The boxes are a bit smaller than single-player mode, but the answer buttons remain the same large size. Player One and Player Two each have 5 light bulbs lit atop their question boxes, and the first player to answer the question correctly may choose to turn off one light belonging to their opponent, or turn back on one of their own. When both players answer incorrectly the red display flashes, and then the message appears, “Incorrect Answer – Lose One Light.” There are no points in the 2-player game; the player with at least one bulb lit, when all of their opponent’s have gone out, is the winner.
