This post just reminds me that there are people out there that really need those obvious warnings for product labels, like, “DON’T EAT, WILL EXPLODE”. This is an excerpt below from a message board about water cooling a pc. Read the full post here.

icon8 Kramer and other members promoting water cooling- you have alot to answer

I decided this weekend to try and quiten my PC by following some other members lead and going down the water cooling road. The fans on my PC were really starting to drive me madmad

The first thing that I did was to remove all the fans. The one on the processor and graphics card were no problem but the one in the power unit was a bugger to get out.

The most difficult part was sealing all the ventilitation openings in the PC case with silicon. I also put silicon all around the joints on the PC case. The smell of silicon was dreadful but when my wife complained I told her to be patent as it will be worth it when we have a completely silent PC.

Because I had completely sealed the PC case the only opening near top was the DVD drive. So I opened that and put the small hose I had purchased specially for the job into the DVD drive as far as it would go. With what I can only describe as great excitement and anticipation, I turned on the water. It really is amazing just how long it took before the case was complete full, and boy was it heavy. That didn’t really bother me as I didn’t intend to be moving the PC anyway.

The big moment had arrived so I called in my wife and mother in law (who was visiting) and I announced “prepare to hear nothing!” and flicked the switch on the socket on the wall.

Before I could even press the power button on front of the PC, with a loud bang, the whole place was plunged into darkness

I knew that it was only the tripswitch so I told my onlookers not to panic and I ran out to the hall to turn the trip switch back on. But can u believe it, it wouldn’t stay on. After five attempts I decided to try unplugging the PC and would you believe…yes the trip switch stayed on. My conclusion: the PC must have in some way been causing the problem.

After about an hour of tries I finally decided to abandon the whole idea of water cooling and emptied the water out of the PC, put back in the fans (except the fan in the power unit, I had broken that one getting it out) and tried the pc AGAIN. IT STILL CAUSED THE TRIP SWTICH TO BLOW!

My PC is completely shagged thanks to stupid suggestions that I got on this forum. What the hell am I going to do now. I spent two hours last night with a hair drier inside the PC case and it still trips the switch.mad mad mad

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Conormad

Accelerated_Composites_hybrid_300

This has even less to do with computing news (personal computing anyway) but I find in interesting none the less. “Being able to go across the country on a tank of gas” must be part of their advertising. Read up on the article, it has some details on the car’s construction vs. costs, etc.

About Box

Even though I haven’t used IE in well over two years, I still like to keep up with the latest happenings in the Microsoft camp. So, here is link to a page that has several screenshots of IE 7 running on WindowsXP. I believe I read somewhere in there that there is a link to download the modified beta (so it runs on XP) but I’m not sure. If you do try it out, let me know. Just remember that it is a beta! (And it’s from Microsoft, shudder)

People all have different opinions about software they use, etc. Here is something that aggravates me to no end, and it’s not just iPhoto that does it. For the vast majority of Mac applications, if you close the window, the app is still running. This was a nuisance when I first switched over from Windows and Linux, but now I like the feature. The programs that don’t follow this guideline should be punished severely :) A prime example is iPhoto. I just wonder why it is the only app from iLife that acts this way?

Found this link out there on the net, thought it was pretty interesting. The article basically says that the first computer virus came out 20 years ago just a few days ago. Read the article to learn the particulars.

I received my copy of iLife 06 from Fedex today, so I’ll be spending the next few weeks working on reviews and podcasts for the site. I don’t have the review up yet, but the podcast for Garageband is up already. It contains everything in the review, and I actually have bookmarks and images in this one.

logo_universal

Just thought that I would show everyone what the new logo is going to be for the Intel Macs. Having the Universal logo shows that the program will run on either Intel or PPC, so if you’re even thinking about buying an Intel Mac in the near future, make sure that you start looking for the universal applications, or you might have to buy the app all over again when you get your new Mac.

Well, classes have come into full swing, so the site won’t be seeing the constant updates that I was pursuing over break. Once again, I ask that anyone that wants to help contact me and that would be greatly appreciated. The next thing posted, however, will probably be the podcast on iLife 06 with a review on the digital life suite. Expect the podcast this weekend and the article sometime next week.

Adobe’s competitor (early beta stages though) to Apple’s Aperture app is available for download from Adobe. Since Aperture isn’t free (neither will it run on my iBook) I decided to download Lightroom and give it a try. I’ll be posting my brief results from playing around with the app here shortly.

Even though this is no great loss for Mac users, Microsoft has quietly announced that it won’t be developing Windows Media Player for Mac anymore. They haven’t had a new version out to my knowledge in quite some time, and even at that, it’s a buggy piece of software by my standards. However, with the 5-year commitment between Apple and Microsoft just updated on Tuesday at Macworld, I find it a little odd that they would discontinue their product now.
